Meet Forest Reflections, a Lap Size Quilt that repeats its foundational block a total of twelve times. This is my first quilt pattern, born from the inspiration of the forest.
The Inspiration of the Forest
I spent much of my life living away from the forest near Dallas and then in the desert of the Arabian Peninsula. Almost every year growing up and then as much as possible as an adult, I would return to the forests of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.
In 2020, with much uncertainty but a full heart I moved back to the US with much more than I had left with, a husband and our four children. We had the opportunity to stay in the UP with my parents for the summer as we looked for a job, which my husband found in Chicago.
Much has happened since then, we have experienced great joy in making a life here together. We have been given incredible opportunities to build community and relationships. We have had sweet, countless moments to treasure the people that have been there the longest: my family. And we have experienced deep heartache and grief.
This quilt is a reflection of the forest as I experience it: a place of peace, grounding, and quiet presence. I am always gripped by the clean air, the crunch of leaves and earth, the scent of sweetness during the summer and fall, and the subtle way the forest breathes and changes with the seasons. Each shift marks time passing, reminding us to slow down, notice, and root ourselves in the present moment.
