Warble, the Warbling Vireo

Have you wondered what warble means? We heard it when we went through the Warblers, which are a family of insect-eating, smaller birds found migrating up and down North America with the changing of seasons. It’s now when we come to Warble that the question pops into my head.

To warble is to sing softly and sweetly with ever-changing notes, one right after the other. There are many birds that have a nice song to sing, but a bird that warbles doesn’t have long pauses and breaks in between the notes of their song and almost seems to sing a tune. Here is a Warbling Vireo’s song: AllAboutBirds.org

Something that is interesting about Warble is that he likes to stay high in the tree tops looking for caterpillars to eat (AllAboutBirds.org). Even Burgess writes of Warble’s love of the tree tops in his classic, The Burgess Bird Book for Children, Jenny Wren comment,

“I don’t know of anybody more fond of the tree tops than he is. He doesn’t seem to care anything about the Old Orchard, but stays over in those big trees along the road. He’s got a nest over in that big elm and it is as high up as that of Goldy the Oriole; I haven’t seen it myself, but Goldy told me about it. Why any one so small should want to live so high up in the world I don’t know, any more than I know why any one wants to live anywhere but in the Old Orchard.”
