Veery, the Veery

Veery, the Veery… it just rolls off the tongue. But what exactly is a Veery? In his classic, The Burgess Bird Book for Children, Thornton W. Burgess mentions that Veery has been named Wilson’s Thrush and Tawny Thrush as well. Veery has this name now because of his call, which you can sample here.

I think that it is such a delight that some birds sing into the evening as the sun goes down. Have you ever been in the woods when that is happening? Veeries are a bird that love to greet the sun in the morning and help put it to sleep. They are a very well traveled bird as well, wintering in Brazil and migrating into North America forests during the Spring and Summer. They travel long distances at night and as allaboutbirds.org helpfully points out, their wings are excellently efficient (source).

Here is what we gathered for Veery:

I wouldn’t mind being cinnamon-brown if I were a bird.

Until next time, keep birding <3 Kate
