Brownie, the Brown Thrasher

In Chapter 30 of The Burgess Bird Book for Children, Jenny Wren asks Peter if he has seen her bigger cousin. If you know the size of a House Wren, you would be just as surprised as Peter was at her question. This larger super family that she is speaking of as her second cousins is composed of three families of birds, the Wrens, Dippers, and the family to which Thrasher belongs, Mimidae.

A common trait of his family is the love of mimicking others for which Allaboutbirds explains, “Brown Thrashers are accomplished songsters that may sing more than 1,100 different song types and include imitations of other birds including Chuck-will’s-widows, Wood Thrushes, and Northern Flickers (source).”

Brown Thrashers give a lot of movement to their tails as they go about the day, which is reminiscent of the Wren family. As you can tell from the name, they tend to thrash around their large tail.
